Southern Chicken Fried Steak Paleo and Low Carb

A low-carb, grain-free, breaded, and pan-fried, southern chicken fried steak with homemade mushroom gravy.

Two Chicken Fried steaks with mushroom gravy.Pin

Cubed steak that is breaded with grain-free breading, seasonings, and pan-fried in avocado oil. I also included a grain-free low-carb mushroom gravy recipe.

So easy to make this savory comfort food. I served mine with the mushroom gravy, but my son ate his plain, as he does not like gravy, which is strange, even for a picky eater.

Add your favorite mashed cauliflower recipe and you have a tasty southern comfort food meal.

If you don't like mushroom gravy, then you could also use this Easy Keto Gravy Recipe that does not contain any mushrooms.

    Easy Keto Gravy
Easy Keto Gravy is a quick and simple, rich and creamy, low carb, gluten-free gravy that you prepare with chicken, turkey, or beef stock.

Can I use just almond flower and flax meal? Add more almond flour instead of sunflower flour?

I really hate frying anything on the stove... I wonder if I could oven fry these?? I have also found that I LOVE Celery Root Mash..

Shannon, I'm thinking you could if you oiled the baking sheet and flip over the meat halfway through baking time. Although it maybe a bit less crispy and more like a "shake and bake" style recipe. I hear you on the frying (so messy sometimes). I'm thinking about getting and trying an air fryer soon.

Forgive me, but I have no idea what a cube steak is? Are they normally tender just fried? Thank you.

Hi Carol, no worries. A cube steak is a sirloin or round steak that has been pounded tender by a meat tenderizer (a mallet with a waffle looking pattern on the end). You can do this yourself, but the meat counter or meat section usually sells them already tenderized and ready to use. I but them already tenderized, as it is an inexpensive cut of meat. If you see a steak that looks like a burger patty with a waffle indentation pattern on it, then that is it.

Sounds so yummy!! I imagine a mashed cauli could also be tweaked to serve as a yummy white gravy for this as well. Will have to try! So raw sunflower seeds -- where do u get those?

Hi Collin, Yes a white gravy would also be good as well. I get the shelled sunflower seeds in the baking section with the other nuts and seeds. You can also use the roasted one if you can't find the raw seeds.

This looks delicious! Chicken fried steak was one of my hubby's favorite dishes in his carb days. Two questions- 1) would it work in the air fryer and 2) could i replace the almond flour with pulverized pork rinds? Or would that be too crispy? Hubby is not big on almond flour.

Yes, on the pork rinds, Sonia and a "maybe" on the air-fryer because I have not tried it yet.

For some reason, chicken fried steak is one of those things that I haven't eaten since going Paleo years ago! High time that situation was corrected, don't you think?
