    Instructions

Heat the olive oil in a stock pot or dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic and saute for 4 minutes or until the onion is translucent and the garlic is fragrant.

    Simmering marinara sauce.

Add the crushed tomatoes, Italian seasoning, salt, pepper,  optional red pepper flakes, and chopped fresh basil. Heat over medium-high heat and stir until combined and just starting to bubble.

Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer the marinara sauce for 25 minutes. Add more salt and black pepper to taste if desired.

Marinara sauce in a glass jar.

Serve immediately, or let the sauce completely cool and store the sauce in covered glass jars in the refrigerator.

Hint: If storing in a sealed glass jar, let the sauce cool completely before pouring it into the jars. Heat can make the glass crack.

    Substitutions

    • Dried Italian Parsley- You can replace the dried parsley with chopped fresh Italian Flat Leaf Parsley.

    Variations

    • Meat Sauce - Add ½ lb browned and drained ground beef or ground Italian sausage to the sauce before simmering for a meat sauce.

So versatile, so many recipes to use this in!!! I made a double batch and want to freeze the leftovers -- do you recommend freezing in the glass jars . . or a freezer-weight plastic container or bag?

Freeze in freezer bags, not glass jars.
